Help with existing loan repayments
A personal loan may have been affordable when it began, but changes in income, household costs or other commitments can make the same instalment difficult later.

Understanding the position
A regular salary does not by itself show whether a repayment remains affordable after essential costs and other commitments.
You can seek help before a payment is missed, or after arrears and collection contact have begun.
Where appropriate, a supported financial assessment may form the basis of a rescheduling or other creditor discussion.
A structured approach
Record the balance, instalment, arrears and any urgent correspondence.
Consider income, essentials and every loan, card or finance commitment.
Compare rescheduling, creditor negotiation and suitable refinancing.
Understand the payment, term, total cost, conditions and reporting.
The detail that matters
Income can reduce, variable earnings can change, rent or family costs can rise, or additional debts can accumulate. The original lending decision does not guarantee that the same payment will remain comfortable throughout the term.
No. Seeking help early may allow more time to understand the position. If payments have already been missed, keep copies of creditor notices and identify any immediate deadlines.
A creditor may contact you, continue contractual interest or profit and charges, report arrears, appoint a collection agent, make a demand under guarantees or security, or pursue legal remedies. What happens depends on the facility and circumstances.
An initial enquiry to Consolidebt does not pause contractual, collection or legal action.
A bank or finance company may consider revised terms based on the account, evidence and its own policies. The Consumer Protection Standards require specified fair-treatment and communication steps for Licensed Financial Institutions, but they do not create an automatic entitlement to rescheduling.
Where the applicable standards cover an arrears repayment offer, the Licensed Financial Institution must document and communicate why it was rejected. A rejection may mean the proposal needs revisiting or another suitable route should be considered; it does not mean a different creditor outcome is guaranteed.
A personal loan cannot be assessed sensibly without the rest of the picture. Several card minimum payments or another loan may be creating as much pressure as the main instalment.
Debt Burden Ratio compares specified monthly debt repayments with gross salary and qualifying regular income. The ordinary consumer maximum is currently 50%, but a lender must still consider the individual circumstances and affordability; being below the maximum does not create an entitlement to credit.
With the appropriate authority, Consolidebt may request information and discuss possible options with the relevant creditor. The authority does not transfer control of your bank account or allow us to enter a final agreement without your approval.
| Question | Rescheduling | Consolidation |
|---|---|---|
| Facility | Existing personal loan | New credit repays one or more debts |
| Assessment | Existing creditor reviews a revised arrangement | New provider assesses eligibility and affordability |
| Cash released? | Normally no new borrowing | Depends on the approved product; avoid increasing debt unnecessarily |
| Key comparison | Payment, term and total amount paid | Rate, fees, term, total cost and underlying affordability |
Official information
CBUAE standards for Licensed Financial Institutions address affordability, financially distressed consumers, arrears and authorised representatives. Article 3 also states the 50% maximum DBR should not be applied automatically as a lending entitlement.
